for Urban Professionals & Other Skeptics in a Rush

As Mother’s Day approaches, I’m reminded of a day not long ago when I watched Anne-Marie Slaughter lean off the edge of a stage. She was demonstrating what would happen if she “leaned in” too far.
It was meant to drive home the point she makes in her new book, Unfinished Business, about women, men, work and family. It’s the culmination of the three years of research and contemplation that followed her Atlantic article entitled “Why women still can’t have it all,” that broke the Internet, and of her life as a woman, a mother, and a successful and ambitious professional. In it, she shares that the intricate web that creates a home and family has more value than she ever placed on it, until she leaned in too far.
Two years in, Slaughter left her dream job as director of policy planning for the U.S. State Department, to be closer to her adolescent boys. She also returned to Princeton as a tenured professor. Really, nothing to scoff at. By her description, though, the response to her resignation was that she just wasn’t up for it. That she decided to take the slow lane, the “mommy track.”
I’d been following Professor Slaughter for years for her scholarship in foreign policy and international law. She was already a celebrity in my geeky world, and her courage to lay out the costs and balance in her personal life catapulted her to my highest esteem. I was definitely the groupie at this event.
You’d think that someone like Sheryl Sandberg or Anne-Marie Slaughter have really made it, so they are free to say whatever they like with abandon. But I think the opposite is true. Anyone who has ever made anything of themselves professionally will tell you it took years of work and dedication to earn their reputation.
These women had plenty to lose as they spoke out as women in what remain male-dominated fields. They spoke out about being women in the one place where, knowingly or not, they’d both been trying to keep gender invisible. Only it isn’t.
There are times when we can pretend that it doesn’t matter if you’re male or female. Morning sickness at work when you’re not telling anyone you’re pregnant yet is not one of those times. The loud whirl of a breast pump (or crying baby) in the background of a conference call you take from home when your baby is five weeks old but you’re needed for the team (or your own business), even though your basically delusional from lack of sleep, is not one of those times. Transitioning back to work while juggling your life-altering new identity as a mother is not one of those times.
Motherhood is often treated as something we can do on the side, while we keep charging ahead with our preconceived plans about what other parts of our lives will look like. The thing is, none of us actually know what we’re getting into before we’re in it.
What Slaughter drives home so elegantly is that we are out of our minds to think that caregiving and child rearing are invisible, background and secondary. They are what keep us going — they need more attention, and the people (usually women) who fulfill those roles should be valued and supported.
There is no question that work is changing when it comes to women, mothers and families.
JP Morgan just expanded a re-entry program designed for returning to the corporate world after at least a two-year “break,” with photos of woman all over the landing page.
The freshly launched Apres is a LinkedIn just for moms who’ve taken time away and are reentering the workforce, but not into the entry level jobs that have been the mom career tax we’ve grown accustomed to — rather, into roles for experienced professionals with organizations that value the many strengths that work experience (and motherhood) yield.
Corporate clients overwhelmingly embraced an online resource I launched in January to support women in their transition to motherhood, eager for a way to support their new mom employees on maternity leave and in the transition back to work.
Fairygodboss.com, a site that provides intel on employers’ female-focused policies, had more than 100,000 visitors this month, with traffic growing steadily by the week.
Daily I hear from in-house women’s and professional development committees from organizations across North America, trying to find or create best practices.
It sure is slow, though.
These pioneers are trying to forge a way that we can be successful, professional and still female. Or more specifically, still mothers in a meaningful way. Not females dressed up as and acting like men, but women living full expressions of their femininity, motherhood, creativity and professional skills. Women who feel confident in the value of what they bring to this world so that they can lean in, and frankly, lean out when what is core to them is to do the invisible, necessary and joyful work (I know, it’s so ironic) — of being a mother.
As Slaughter explains, we all benefit from cohesive family lives. We all benefit from not running around like lunatics trying to do it all and have it all, all at once. Moms birth the world. They need some support.
It’s been a while since I connected with the Curated Wellness community, and with Mother’s Day just around the corner, there’s no better time to share what’s been keeping me so busy.
The heart of CW is holistic wellness for everyone, no matter how ambitious you are or how lousy the wellness quotient of your profession is today – we are evolving, and working together, we’re getting better. I see it from the beginning to end of an engagement, and I hear about it from many of you, even years after working together. In fact, anyone who has taken my Stress 911 workshop knows that stress can be a good thing, it’s what we do before and after peaks of stress that impacts our wellbeing.
As a “little side project,” (she says, laughing at that naïve idea) I created a resource for new moms that is curated with the same rigor that goes into all CW curriculum. It’s holistic, comprehensive, and there’s nothing else like it. This time, though, it isn’t just me – it’s me grilling a faculty of 12 experts on different elements of maternal wellbeing. It’s also completely virtual and on-demand. It’s called the New Mom Dream Team.
When I was working on this resource, I had no idea that it would dovetail with my corporate work. I was actually considering not mentioning it here because, right on stereotype, I worried that talking about motherhood in a professional environment would paint me as too, well, unprofessional. Spoiler alert, I was very wrong about that. I just had to do something about the utter lack of comprehensive wellness resources for new moms, because I was one not so long ago, and I know first hand how big a difference the right support can make to mom, baby (and the rest of the family too). What has surprised and delighted me is the overwhelming interest from corporate clients to offer this resource to employees heading out on maternity leave. It’s part of a slow and steady shift to meaningful changes in the way women, men, work and family are fitting together. You’ll hear more about this in an upcoming piece in the Huffington Post.
It is already my belief that by tuning in here, you are a change-maker in your field, looking for a better way to live, work and lead. But the desire to be a leader in workplace wellness for women – and to support them right in the midst of the transition to motherhood – is truly breathtaking. A recent study commissioned by the Canadian Bar Association showed (not so surprisingly) that stress, burnout, anxiety, poor physical health, and mental health issues (specifically depression) top the list of health and wellness issues Canadian lawyers face. A dismal minority (3%) of Canadian lawyers believe that the legal profession provides enough support to lawyers who are confronting health and wellness issues, with a substantial majority (84%) valuing live education sessions on health and wellness. We get it. We also think an enjoyable long lunch break that just might change your life is a great idea.

One of the best perks of the work I do at Curated Wellness is getting to co-create with inspired entrepreneurs. I recently had the opportunity to speak with Globe & Mail columist and r/ally founder Leah Eichler about happiness at work. Who feels “well” when they’re chronically unhappy? If wellbeing is a measure of feeling – physical and emotional – then it takes more than a hearty dose of kale to improve it in a palpable way.
A major focus of Curated Wellness (CW) workshops and private sessions is Primary Food – inedibles that are essential to a feeling of nourishment and wellbeing. These fall into four broad categories: exercise, relationships, sprituality, and career. While CW provides practical tools to make eating well fit seamlessly into a busy lifestyle, the program also hones in on these four elements to facilitate truly holistic wellbeing.
So how does Curated Wellness improve happiness in the workplace?
1) Through education. There is so much noise in the wellness space, it can be hard to know where to start. CW does the work for you, teaching tools to effectively create healthy habits – physical health and mental health. In doing so, we dispell a myth that is a common barrier to happiness. The myth is that feeling better and living well requires a total life overhaul. This is just not true. The key is creating healthy habits and shifting beliefs about wellbeing, not in ditching one life for another. The grass is always greener, and CW gives participants the tools to start where they are.
2) CW catalyzes a cultural shift towards better self-care, both in the workplace and when employees engage in the rest of their lives. Employers who hire CW want their employees to take better care of themselves, to be happier, and to stick around and do the best work they can do. They know that happy and healthy teams produce the best results, which include retention and innovation. They also want to prevent some of the serious adverse effects of a stressful job from impacting their employees. CW workshops frequently include senior leadership to encourage creating a shift in workplaces.
3) Creating space. CW workshops and coaching create a forum dedicated to wellbeing. Participants and coaching clients get time for reflection (when did you last have that?!), ask questions, and always, always find out that they are not alone in their concerns and experiences. Many of the questions I’m asked have been carried internally by the client for years – without space or time to emerge and be answered.
